A typical bodywork session includes a combination of modalities, depending on your needs. It may also include yoga poses or stretches if needed. You determine how much pressure is needed. Too much pressure can cause more pain and tension, which is counteractive to the goal of lengthening and relaxing the muscle. Bodywork is most effective when your body is not resisting.
swedish and deep tissue work
Swedish massage is also referred to as relaxation massage. The goal is to elicit the Relaxation Response, described by Dr. Herbert Benson (Harvard Medical School) as inducing "anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory changes that counteract the effects of stress on the body", as well as boosting your immune system. This modality can be very helpful in cases of adrenal fatigue, anxiety disorders, hypertension, and other stress-related conditions.
Deep tissue work comes from the Swedish tradition as well, and is used sparingly to release pain and tension from a muscle. It targets problem areas, addressing muscle/tendon attachments, trigger points, and fascial restrictions.
By correctly applying pressure to a muscle while it is contracting and releasing, we can "reset" the muscle memory and help it to return to a more comfortable resting length. We use both passive and active movement along with a comfortable level of pressure to achieve beneficial results. This technique can also help to release adhesions and trigger points - painful "knots" in a muscle and fascia that can often refer pain to other areas of the body.
This technique focuses on the fascia - the membranes that wrap, connect, and support your muscles. Sometimes this fascia will harden or contract, causing pain. Through slow, intentional pressure, the fascia will release, loosening up restricted areas and relieving pain.
Used for thousands of years, this eastern medicine technique uses cups with gentle suction to loosen the fascia of the skin while breaking up adhesions and scar tissue in the muscles and connective tissues. Massage cupping can be combined with deep tissue, sports, and relaxation massage.
trigger point therapy
Occasionally a muscle will develop trigger points that do not clear with neuromuscular work alone. In these cases we can apply sustained pressure directly to the trigger point for a short period, causing a release in the fascia and a corresponding lengthening in that muscle group.
Prenatal massage focuses on relaxation and helping the body adjust to its changing posture. Jamye is trained to help relax the mother while avoiding points on the body that are contraindicated during pregnancy. Our custom table allows the pregnant client to lay face down comfortably. Postpartum massage helps to reorganize the pelvis after delivery, easing stress and relaxing muscles that become tight from baby care.
mindfulness and breathwork
Mindfulness means maintaining a sense of the present moment, and paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judgement. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing right now, rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. Focusing on the breath is a time-honored way to bring awareness to the present moment, and we integrate yogic breathwork, or Pranayama, with a mindfulness practice to further help the nervous system reset and break the cycle of stress and anxiety.
Shannon and Jamye both utilize smooth, heated basalt stones as tools to soften fascial restrictions, relax muscles, and relieve stress. We'll often use these before we delve into deeper bodywork, especially in the neck and back, to soften the fascia and reduce post-session soreness.
therapeutic grade essential oils
Essential oils are extremely effective at decreasing inflammation, relieving pain, increasing circulation, and reducing stress and anxiety, all without the side effects associated with pharmaceutical drugs.
symphony of the cells healing protocols
These Essential Oil Healing Protocols use specific oils in a precise order along the spine and feet to offer support to our clients who experience chronic discomfort or illness. The list of benefits for each protocol is long and include particular issues that may be helped. Here are some of the protocols that we most often use:
- Basic Protocol: Boosts the immune system and reduces stress - safe for use with children
- Chi Protocol: Helps to reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia, back pain, fatigue, and tendonitis
- Hormone Balance Protocol: Helps to balance hormones associated with PMS, menopause symptoms, thyroid disorders, and endometriosis
- Inflammatory Protocol: Helps to reduce systemic inflammation, lowering symptoms of chronic fatigue, restless leg syndrome, headaches, and other inflammation-related symptoms
- Lymphatic Protocol: Helps with symptoms of lymphedema, supports weight loss, reduces fluid retention, and soothes skin issues such as eczema and psoriasis
- Neurological Protocol: Helps relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, brain injuries, dementia, and insomnia
Reiki is a type of healing energy. We can use Reiki during a therapeutic massage session to help the body relax further and to encourage a healing state. It can also be helpful in reducing the sensation of pain, allowing deeper pressure with less discomfort. Jamye also offers Reiki and energy balancing sessions as a stand-alone therapy.
